Show & Tell: No Longer a Kid’s Game


Do you remember the Elementary School game of “Show & Tell?” The concept is simple: each student was to reveal something about themselves (a passion, a belief, a favorite toy, etc.) to their classmates that will further their relationships and allow an understanding of oneself. Whether we knew it or not, that was the hope of the teacher implementing this game. Were you forced to just TALK about something? No, you were told to SHOW something about yourself.

Yes, we can chalk this up to a “childhood” game that is no longer applicable to us mature, sophisticated professionals. But the truth is, as a brand, we constantly have to SHOW & TELL who we are. This comes in many forms- one of which falls under social media marketing.

For those of you who have been living under a rock, social media marketing is a form of Internet marketing that utilizes social networking websites as a marketing tool (think: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, etc.). The goal is to produce content that users will share with their social network to help a company increase brand exposure and broaden customer reach.

Let’s talk Facebook: What type of posts work? Take a look at what the most engaging Facebook posts contained:


Photos. Are you using them in EVERY post you make? If not, that’s just silly. They account for 93% of engagement! And videos, did you know they are shared 12X more than text and link posts combined? Tap into that statistic!

When it comes to engaging with your audience, you have to focus more on the SHOW rather than the TELL. Would YOU rather be told something or shown something? Don’t lose perspective and remember to constantly step into the shoes of your customer.

  • Track your post’s performance: Use Facebook’s Insight feature to see which of your posts are driving engagement, and which are not.
  • Spy on Competition: See what your rivals are doing and use this information to inspire content and strategy ideas!
  • Post about Trending Topics: Facebook puts trending topics in top right of your home page bar- use this as a tool to stay relevant in current events!
  • Tag other pages in your posts: This maximizes your audience reach by tapping into other pages’ followers!
